Diwali comes with its own checklist: the lights need to go up, the house needs to be ready, the food needs to be prepared, and, of course, the invitations need to go out. But somewhere between hosting family, catching up with friends and indulging in one too many helpings of mithai, there’s bound to be a little chaos. Think stained outfits, muddy footprints and a laundry pile that seems to grow by the minute. But what if we spent less time worrying about the mess and more time enjoying the moments that made it?

That’s the thought behind Ariel’s #FreeTheLemon campaign, which questions an age-old household habit with a rather simple question: Why should the lemon be doing the laundry? Traditionally turned to for tackling stubborn stains, lemons have somehow found themselves assigned another job in the household. Ariel’s campaign challenges this practice, encouraging people to rethink everyday laundry routines and leave the stain removal to Ariel Power Gel instead. It’s also a larger conversation about how household responsibilities are distributed, and why keeping everything spotless shouldn’t automatically fall on women.

Joining this conversation is actor Shriya Saran, whose career has spanned over two decades and multiple film industries. Since making her acting debut with the Telugu film Ishtam in 2001, she has appeared in films across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema, including Sivaji: The Boss, Awarapan, Manam and the Drishyam franchise, as well as SS Rajamouli’s RRR. Having spent years navigating the demands of a career in the spotlight, Saran brings a refreshingly honest perspective to the idea of balancing life’s many responsibilities.

Ask her about achieving the perfect work-life balance, however, and she is quick to admit that she hasn’t quite cracked the code. For her, hosting isn’t about maintaining an immaculate home or ensuring every little detail is in place. It’s about bringing people together, sharing good food and creating memories worth looking back on. And when it comes to the inevitable stains that follow, she believes they’re often proof that you’ve had a good time.

In conversation with ELLE, Saran gets candid about the pressure women often take on when it comes to household chores, why a little mess should never get in the way of a good celebration and how small changes, like letting Ariel Power Gel handle the laundry, can leave us with more time for the things that actually matter.

ELLE: Modern living often comes with the pressure to balance work, personal commitments and the little things that make a house feel like home. How do you approach creating a lifestyle that feels both beautiful and manageable, without getting caught up in the pursuit of perfection?

Shriya Saran (SS): I don’t know! I don’t think I’ve ever managed to do it, and I’m not sure anyone else has either. If anyone has figured it out, please tell me how, because honestly, there’s no such thing as balance.

ELLE: From creating a welcoming home to getting ready for a festive gathering, it is often the little details that make a difference. How do you balance the joy of hosting and entertaining with the everyday tasks that come with keeping your home looking its best?

SS: I think hosting should be about having fun and bringing friends together to make wonderful memories. It should be about enjoying yourself, laughing with friends and, of course, overeating delicious food! Ultimately, hosting is about the smiles, the memories you create and the pictures you click along the way.

To everyone listening, thank you so much. Happy Diwali! I hope you have a wonderful Diwali filled with joy and festivities. May you bring all the positivity you need into your life, and may this Diwali mark the beginning of beautiful memories, wonderful times and a bright future for you all.

ELLE: Ariel’s #FreeTheLemon campaign builds on this very idea by asking, ‘Why should the lemon be doing the laundry?’ and encouraging people to rethink the traditional use of lemon for stain removal. What do you think of this idea, and how can small changes to our everyday routines make life a little easier?

SS: I think, over the years, women have often taken it upon themselves to make sure the house is clean, the food is laid out properly, and nothing is dirty. And if something is, they feel it is their responsibility to clean it up. But ultimately, it’s not just their responsibility, and it certainly isn’t the poor lemon’s responsibility either! The lemon has a much more important job to do: making our food delicious and adding that lovely zing to our salads!

I think family time should be about joy, laughter and making memories. School uniforms are meant to get dirty, socks are bound to turn brown, and if children have been jumping into muddy puddles, you know they’ve had a good time! Colours are meant to spill onto clothes, and a little mithai on your outfit is sometimes a sign that you’ve truly enjoyed the festivities. These are the little moments and memories we should be making, rather than worrying about stains.

That’s why I like the idea behind Ariel’s #FreeTheLemon campaign. Sometimes, a small change in our everyday routine can make life so much easier. With Ariel Power Gel taking care of the stains, we can spend less time worrying about laundry and more time enjoying the moments that really matter.
