The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday condemned the remark made by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness.
Mohamed, in a now-deleted social media post, described Sharma as “fat for a sportsman” and questioned his leadership skills, calling him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had”.
Speaking to CNN-News18, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia called the comment “unfortunate” and potentially demoralising for the Indian cricket team during a crucial International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament.
He said, “All players are performing at their highest potential, and the results are visible. Individuals should refrain from making such derogatory statements for personal publicity.”
Following the backlash, Mohamed removed her post and clarified that she did not intend to body-shame Sharma. She defended her stance, saying she was merely pointing out fitness concerns, but her remarks sparked widespread criticism.
