Madhuri Dixit Nene made a fabulous case for maximalist Indian craftsmanship in a striking ikat sari by designer Mayyur Girotra at the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Antilia, the Ambani residence in Mumbai’s Cumballa Hills neighbourhood. The handwoven sari features rich woven intricate floral motifs in deep red, green and black colors strongly associated with the traditional Patola palette. One of Gujarat’s most celebrated textile traditions, patola is traditionally woven in Patan, a heritage city in Gujarat’s northern part, for centuries, using a double-ikat technique.

The sari is framed with a beautifully crafted hand embroidered border, which adds another layer of richness to the whole look. The rich florals and detailed work, against the traditional palette, come together like a vivacious rangoli. The sari is a statement piece, vibrant and lively.

Dixit Nene accessorises her look with chandbali earrings embellished with pearls and navratan stones, a stack of mixed and matched kadas and statement gemstone rings. The emerald ring and the red gemstones in the kada add a borrow from the colour scheme of the sari and tie the look together.,

It is not the first time Madhuri has pushed the limits of the sari. Dixit Nene has been surprising in her choice of saris over the past few months. For one of her promotional looks during the publicity tour of her movie Maa Behen in June this year, she chose a contemporary denim sari by the same designer. Her latest patola-inspired look is another hit, albeit its traditional appeal. Girotra’s design vocabulary often draws from India’s rich textile heritage. The designer’s recent collaboration with Swadesh has put Patan patola, bandhani and Banarasi brocade at the center of a contemporary couture collection.

Dixit Nene’s neutral makeup highlights soft pink tones while complements the vibrant palette of the sari. movement with a lock of gajra delicately tucked into her wavy hair ties the look together and adds a certain freshness to it.
