Smriti Mandhana eyes massive milestone in Women’s ODIs
Smriti Mandhana is on the verge of achieving a historic feat in the upcoming ODI series against Australia, starting December 5. The ace Indian batter has already etched her name in the history of women’s cricket. She now aims to break another record by completing 4,000 runs in the ODI format.
Mandhana is just 310 runs away from reaching the milestone and can become the fastest Indian batter to do so. Former India captain Mithali Raj currently owns the record. The legendary batter needed 112 innings to record 4,000 runs in 50-over cricket. She made that happen during a home game against West Indies in 2011.
Mandhana has so far represented India in 88 Women’s ODIs to aggregate 3,690 runs at a stellar average of 45. She has registered eight centuries and 27 fifties in the format. Considering her recent form in white-ball cricket, Mandhana is expected to showcase her A-game during the Australia tour. The first ODI of the three-match series is slated to be hosted at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.
Australia’s Belinda Clark holds the world record for the fastest 4,000 runs in WODIs. She needed 86 innings to claim the monumental feat. The other top players on the list are Meg Lanning, Laura Wolvaardt, Karen Rolton, Suzie Bates, Stafanie Taylor and Tammy Beaumont. Lanning had completed her 4,000 ODI runs in the 89th innings while Wolvaardt required 96 innings to reach that level.
Earlier in October, Smriti Mandhana had shattered another long-standing ODI record of Mithali Raj. Mandhana currently has the most centuries (eight) in the format as an Indian batter. Raj struck seven hundreds in WODIs during her illustrious career. Mandhana dethroned the former batter with her 100-run knock against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
While her national teammates touched down on Australian soil a few days ago, Mandhana has been there for nearly one month. She featured in the just-finished Women’s Big Bash League as part of the Adelaide Strikers.
Mandhana was impressive in the T20 competition, though her team failed to reach the Playoffs and finished in the second-last spot in the standings. The Indian opener registered 144 runs in her five appearances in the WBBL. She struck one half-century while maintaining an average of 28.80 and a strike-rate of 142.57.
