How to apply cream bronzer for a super subtle sculpting effect

The carved-out contour of the 2010s feels like it’s long behind us. In its place, we’re brushing up on how to apply cream bronzer for a much more subtly sculpted finish. Alongside a softer aesthetic, products are evolving with sheer, buildable cream bronzers that melt seamlessly into skin. That’s not to say we don’t still love a powder bronzer or trad contour moment, but for a gentle every day look, cream bronzer is fast becoming an MVP in our makeup bag.

To ensure we’re getting the most out of our makeup though, we asked some of the world’s leading makeup artists (the ones setting those softer trends) how to apply cream bronzer to get the most beautiful finish.

What’s the difference between cream bronzer and contour?

In order to know how to apply cream bronzer, it’s important to know how it differs from contour. “Contour is typically a cooler toned shade to create shadows and sculpt the skin,” explains leading celebrity makeup artist, Diane Buzzetta, whose clients include Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Kaia Gerber and Camila Morrone. Traditionally, it would be applied to enhance the appearance of where shadows would naturally fall on the face (like beneath the cheekbone and jaw). “Bronzer has more warmth to bring colour to where the sun would normally hit for a sun-kissed look,” Diane adds: for instance the temples, the bridge of the nose and the tops of cheeks.

“There’s a technical difference,” agrees top makeup artist, Micol Melani, whose clients include Hailee Steinfeld and Madelyn Cline. “Bronzer is meant to add warmth to the face, so it typically has warmer, golden or orange undertones. Contour, on the other hand, has cooler, greyish undertones designed to mimic natural shadows and create definition.”

However, modern contours and bronzers have merged in recent years and can often be used interchangeably. “Makeup has evolved,” confirms Micol. “These days, many artists — including myself — reach for neutral-toned bronzers that can bronze and sculpt at the same time. The result is much more balanced, natural and effortless. Honestly, I can’t even remember the last time I used a traditional contour product on a client,” she says.

What’s the best way to apply cream bronzer?

There are two golden rules (quite literally) when it comes to applying cream bronzer. The first: don’t overdo it. You can always apply more, but if you start with too much and it has nowhere to go, your bronzer can end up looking muddy. The second: don’t sketch your bronzer straight onto your face. “I never like to go directly to the face without warming the product and distributing evenly onto the brush,” notes Diane. This gives you more control when layering up the amount of product you want and it melts more evenly into skin with no patches or blocks.

“For a pot, like Chanel Les Beige Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream, that you can stick your brush right into, I would load the brush and blend onto my hand first to make sure that when I apply it to the face, it is evenly distributed. For a Rare Beauty Warm Wishes Effortless Bronzer Stick, I would take the stick to my hand first, then blend into the brush before applying it to the face,” explains Diane.

I tried this technique (having always sketched my bronzer straight onto my face previously) and loved the much softer finish it gave. As for finding your shade, going close to your skin tone will give a more natural finish, going a few shades darker will give you a more dramatic sculpted look.

What brush do you use to apply cream bronzer?

To get the best out of your cream products, use a dense angled or flat brush to apply cream bronzer. You want to use gentle tapping and stippling motions, only blending the outer edges, to ensure the product stays where you want it.
