High jewellery looks even better with everyday clothes. Here’s proof
High jewellery has always been at its most interesting when worn with a slight sense of wrongness. Think Princess Diana in cycling shorts and pearls, Sharon Stone taking a Gap shirt to the Oscars or Carrie Bradshaw making a tutu work on a Manhattan pavement. The formula is hardly new: take something out of its usual setting, put it somewhere it doesn’t quite belong and watch both become more interesting. Sometimes all it takes is the wrong outfit to make jewellery feel new again.
Coco Chanel famously piled faux pearls alongside the real thing, while heirlooms have long found second lives pinned to lapels, threaded onto ribbons or stacked with whatever happened to be in the jewellery box. The fun has rarely been in following the instructions. A brooch can migrate to a collar, temple jewellery can sit over a knit and the pieces you saved for after dark can quite happily see daylight.
