Indian seamers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj came up with memorable performances to help their team win the Edgbaston Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Former England pacer, Darren Gough praised India’s strong performance and their pace bowling pair of Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, as they delivered a historic win in Birmingham to help the tourists level in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Gough hailed the two speedsters for their “absolutely superb” display at Edgbaston, where the duo outbowled England seamers, and gave India an unforgettable Test victory by 336 runs.
“(While) India’s batting has been underrated, they’ve been fantastic, what I saw in the last Test match, without Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep and Siraj were absolutely superb,” Gough told ANI at Yuvraj Singh’s charity gala event in London on Wednesday, July 9, supporting the former India cricketer’s YouWeCan cancer awareness charity programme.
Gough also noted left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja as he kept an end tight with 1 for 40 on Day 5. “Fair play to Jadeja as well, I thought Jadeja did a very good job on the last day. He was a worry in the first game but the way he came back on a flat pitch, not a thing available, he was outstanding as well,” he said.

After India posted a mammoth 587 in the first innings, the visitors needed their bowlers to stand up. On a benign surface that offered very little old-ball movement, Siraj produced an exceptional spell of 6 for 70 and along with Akash Deep’s skillful 4 for 88 helped Shubman Gill’s men take a massive lead of 180 runs.
India then set an insurmountable target of 608 runs and forced England’s aggressive Bazball brigade to eat a humble pie and try to bat for a draw to keep their 1-0 series lead. While Siraj maintained the pressure at his end, it was Akash Deep’s turn to hit the headlines with a memorable feat. The skiddy right-arm seamer produced an excellent set of spells late on Day 4 and on Day 5 to end with figures of 6 for 99 and a match haul of ten wickets, helping dismiss the much-vaunted home batting line-up for only 271.
It was a performance for the ages from the two Indian seamers, who were under immense pressure to deliver the goods amid the absence of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after he had been rested for the Birmingham Test due to workload concerns.
Bumrah would’ve watched gleefully how Akash Deep and Siraj banged the ball in on a flat surface and extracted more movement out of it with the new ball than the tall English seamers, who were thwarted in either innings by skipper Gill’s sensational knocks of 269 and 161.
The ace bowler’s return for the Lord’s Test will further lift the spirit of the tourists when they hit the ground running for a potential 2-1 series lead from Thursday, July 10.
