Shubman Gill geared up for his maiden assignment as India’s Test captain with an intense photoshoot. Less than two weeks before the first Test against England in Headingley, the Indian skipper posed for a series of clicks.

Given the responsibility to lead the side after replacing the now-retired Rohit Sharma at the helm, Gill is aiming for a successful beginning to his stint.

The five-Test series against England not only kickstarts India’s campaign in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle but also ushers in a new era for Indian cricket. Following the retirements of Rohit and legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli, Gill’s men will be under immense pressure, facing heavy odds stacked against them in strenuous English conditions.

Gill’s struggles in Test cricket have only heightened the scrutiny around his appointment as the new captain. The youngster hasn’t always lived up to his talent and reputation. A prolific run-getter in limited-overs cricket, he averages a meagre 35.05 after 32 Tests with five centuries.

Gill’s record overseas stands worse, with the elegant batter facing criticism for his technical flaws. He made scores of 31, 28, 1, 20 and 13 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in Australia and averages less than 30 away from home.

But the selectors have backed the growing Punjab cricketer after taking a strong account of his undoubted abilities and leadership potential from coaches, including the great Rahul Dravid. Gill will have to repay the faith and prove his naysayers wrong by leading from the front with a prolific run in England, while also ensuring his tactics and strategy to counter the famous ‘Bazball’ threat is spot on.

It would be interesting to see whether the talented right-hander stays at No.3 or moves one spot down to take the Kohli spot at No.4 after the sudden exit of the Indian stalwart. Gill shifting two down would open up space in the batting order at No.3, for which youngster Sai Sudharsan and comeback man Karun Nairare expected to forge a close race.

Either way, the skipper needs runs to denounce the negativity on his ascent to Test captaincy and truly begin the Shubman Gill era. The first Test against England kicks off at Leeds on June 20.
