6 easy ways to fix dehydrated skin
Dryness, flakiness, a rather disappointing dullness… they’re all signs of dehydrated skin, a symptom that many of us suffer from at one point or another. For me, dehydration creeps up when I least expect it – in the heat, when I’m particularly stressed or just when my skin decides it’s not going to play ball. Which is why I set out to find hydrating formulas that can get to the crux of the issue, without copious amounts of effort.
What are the signs of skin dehydration?
According to skin expert Dr Sophie Shotter, dehydrated skin is common in summer, but many of us don’t know that we’re suffering from it. “One of the first signs is a lack of luminosity,” she explains. “The skin might appear lacklustre, which occurs because dehydration reduces cellular turnover, meaning that dead skin cells can accumulate on its surface.”
You might also notice that your skin looks older than it did before, with more fine lines and wrinkles, as well as being more sensitive, reactive, flaky, rough and tight. If it suddenly feels uncomfortable and you’re not sure why, chances are you might be suffering a bout of dehydration.
How to hydrate the skin: 6 essential tips
Use hydrating skincare ingredients
Ensure your skincare routine is well-stocked with hydration heroes, whether that’s L’Oréal’s Revitalift Filler 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which is affordable and incredibly effective, or Kiehl’s Ultra-Pure High Potency Serum. Always layer with a good moisturiser afterwards to seal it in.

Fortify your skin barrier
If your skin barrier is compromised, you’re likely to suffer from transepidermal water loss (or dehydration). So utilise ceramides, omegas and oils (where needed) to rebuild and support the barrier, recommends facialist and founder of Skin Matters, Joanne Evans.
