Somewhere between replying to emails, hopping from one Teams call to the next and remembering to refill your coffee, you forget to move your body. By the end of the day, your tight hips, aching neck and stiff lower back aren’t really separate complaints, they’re all just your body’s way of asking for movement.

According to Dr Babu George, chief physiotherapist, Gleneagles BGS Hospital, prolonged sitting affects far more than posture. Blood circulation slows, muscles begin to tighten, the spine remains under constant pressure and movement becomes increasingly restricted. “Movement is essential for healthy circulation. When we sit for prolonged periods, blood flow slows, muscles become imbalanced and the spine remains under constant pressure,” George explains. Beyond musculoskeletal concerns such as neck pain, lower back pain and tight hips, long hours of sitting can also contribute to fatigue and poor mental wellbeing. Yoga offers a way to interrupt that pattern through intentional movement. According to Surbhi Goyal, a yoga instructor, the muscles that bear the brunt of desk jobs are often the hip flexors, hamstrings, chest and neck. “When muscles stay in the same position for eight to nine hours, they naturally become tight,” she says.

These are the five yoga poses for desk job aches that deserve a place in your routine:

Cat-cow pose (marjaryasana-bitilasana)

Why it helps: “Cat-cow improves spinal mobility and helps reduce stiffness in the back,” says Goyal, explaining that regular spinal movement helps offset the prolonged pressure created by sitting for long hours.

How to practise: Begin on all fours with your wrists beneath your shoulders and knees under your hips. Inhale as you lift your chest and tailbone, then exhale as you round your spine and tuck your chin. Repeat for eight to ten slow breaths.

Low lunges (anjaneyasana)
