During the same press tour, Theron also wore head-to-toe Tom Ford: a blue-and-white striped shirt and a transparent, rain-slicker knee-length skirt, with sheer, polka-dotted stockings and stilettos. Black leather gloves pushed the shirt cuffs midway up her arms. All in all, she just looked like she had had enough—of what, I couldn’t tell you.
While Zendaya’s press-tour looks have had a mystical edge with white gowns, Grecian silhouettes and actual feathered wings, Theron has gone in a completely different direction. She didn’t look like the antagonist in a centuries-old story; she just looked badass. To be clear, this is not a new trend. The femme fatale, the vampire, the ice queen: none of these aesthetics is new. But when it comes to film, the uniform has not evolved beyond the predictability of bare minimum markers: black, latex, leather, high heels, a little bit of cleavage—the visual shorthand for ‘bad’ with ‘sexy’ boldened and underlined three times. While in reality, a fashion supervillain dresses with the confidence of someone who has absolutely no interest in being liked.
At Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter 1998 ready-to-wear showcase, Joan, fire was one of the collection’s central references. The palette was heavy on red; models even had their pupils painted red. Reptile skins created a tactile, almost hostile surface, while slits and sheer fabrics created contrast. These were not clothes designed to make a woman look badass, least of all unapproachable.
For Matières Fécales’ fall 2025 ready-to-wear collection—where the designer pair cited McQueen as an influence—the collection featured sharply darted, strong-shouldered tailoring. Suits were distressed without looking careless. And that distinction matters: there is a difference between looking punk and looking like a supervillain. The former can be messy, grungy and even dishevelled. The latter is strategically put together with an intent to intimidate—with aggressively winged eyeliner driving the point home. Every detail suggests that the chaos is entirely under control and intentional.
No one on these runways looked like they were going to steal your man. But his trust fund? No promises there.
